What is a kettlebell?
- The kettlebell is a cast-iron Russian, weightlifting tool that looks like a cannonball with a handle.
- Former Russian military instructor Pavel Tsatsouline brought the kettlebell, used since the 18th century in Russia, to attention in the U.S. in 2001, when he began working with Dragon Door Inc. to produce and promote the fitness tool.
- Kettlebells come in a wide variety of weights, from 6 pounds to 106 pounds. Various exercises including swings, squats and presses are done with the kettlebell. All the exercises utilize the whole body; the legs, hips, abdomen, back, arms and shoulders work in coordinated movement.
Why work with a kettlebell?
- To burn fat and develop explosive power in a short (15-30 minutes) workout
- To build lean, wiry–and most importantly–functional muscle
- To enhance cardiovascular fitness without running
- To hone body mechanics, promote physical self-awareness, and improve posture and flexibility
- Because kettlebells are accessible to men and women of all ages and levels of conditioning
How do I know if the kettlebell is right for me?
- I want a fast and effective workout.
- I want a portable exercise tool that allows me to work out at home, at the park, or in a hotel room.
- I like the idea being able to focus on strength, cardio, and flexibility in a single workout.
- I am tired of the gym experience. Kettlebell trainer Brian Copeland sums this feeling up perfectly when he says, "Train like an athlete, not a hamster."
